Frequently Asked Questions

We're here to make personal finance easy

Why 3rd Decade?

The question is, why not 3rd Decade? We’re dedicated to transforming financial futures by empowering young adults in their “3rd Decade of life” with the knowledge and tools needed for long-term success. We offer comprehensive financial education, personalized mentorship, and a $250 Roth IRA match to ensure you have the resources and support to build a solid financial foundation.  By focusing on education, mentorship, and practical financial strategies, we make your financial journey easy, helping you secure a brighter financial future.

There is no catch – just your commitment to yourself! We don’t sell investment products, we don’t manage your money, and we don’t charge you anything (Ask our Grant Writer – she’ll tell you). As a non-profit,  we’re here to empower you to feel comfortable and confident in making educated financial decisions. Financial Mentoring is made possible through dedicated volunteers who are committed to creating a safe, judgement fee environment that is focused on your best interests.

We believe that financial education should be easily accessible and comfortable! We will do our best to accommodate if you have a female or male financial mentor preference, have accessibility requests, or are bilingual (Spanish).

Absolutely! We’ll help you work towards your financial goals whether you are doing so as an individual or as a team. We highly recommend that couples who are sharing finances and/or planning on sharing their life together into retirement participate in the program together.

The mentoring process starts with a Discovery meeting where you lay all your (financial) cards out on the table without any judgment so your mentor can fully understand your current financial situation. We always say we don’t care how you got there, we only care about where you want to go. This first meeting gives you and your mentor a solid idea of your financial goals, both short and long term, what your budget looks like, your current financial health, and anything else YOU want to discuss. Together, you will create a financial plan that will outline your financial purpose, your goals, and next steps for you to take on your financial journey.

One year after your Discovery Meeting, you will attend a Progress Meeting with your mentor to check in, celebrate financial wins, work thorough financial pain-points, and re-evaluate your goals and Financial Plan.

Your final Progress meeting takes place one year later.  You will again meet with your mentor to check in, celebrate financial wins, work thorough financial pain-points, and re-evaluate your goals and Financial Plan.  At the end of this meeting, you can expect to feel confident in making financial decisions for yourself,  with a clear understanding of your financial goals, actionable strategies to achieve them, and the knowledge to navigate your financial future with assurance.

You can still participate in the 3rd Decade program even if you’re already working with a financial advisor. Our participants have found great value in working with both our financial mentors and their personal financial advisors simultaneously.
